The Ultimate Guide to Turkish Breakfast

Turkish breakfast — or kahvaltı — is not just a meal; it's a cultural experience that brings families and friends together. At The Tango Hotel Istanbul, our complimentary open buffet breakfast with over 50 items is one of our guests' favorite experiences.
What Makes Turkish Breakfast Special?
Unlike the quick grab-and-go breakfasts common in many Western countries, Turkish breakfast is an elaborate, leisurely affair. The word kahvaltı literally means "before coffee" (kahve altı), reflecting the tradition of enjoying a spread of small dishes before the morning coffee.
Essential Turkish Breakfast Items
Cheeses: A typical spread includes at least 3-4 varieties — beyaz peynir (white cheese similar to feta), kaşar (aged yellow cheese), tulum peyniri (aged in goatskin), and lor (fresh curd cheese).
Olives: Both black and green varieties, often from the Aegean region, sometimes marinated with herbs and olive oil.
Eggs: Prepared in various ways — boiled, fried (sahanda yumurta), or the beloved menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes, peppers, and spices).
Honey & Kaymak: Rich, clotted cream paired with raw honey — a quintessential combination that visitors fall in love with.
Jams & Preserves: Homemade varieties including rose petal, sour cherry, fig, quince, and strawberry.
Bread: Fresh-baked simit (sesame-crusted bread rings), pide, and village bread (köy ekmeği).
Pastries: Börek (flaky pastry filled with cheese or spinach), poğaça (soft bread rolls), and açma.
Vegetables: Sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers — always fresh and in season.
Spreads: Butter, tahini-pekmez (sesame paste with grape molasses), and various dips.
Beverages: Turkish tea (çay) served in tulip-shaped glasses is essential. Turkish coffee follows after the meal.
